Persevere, perspective, amiable, compassionate–these are some of the wondrous words students have learned about this year. These are not words that first graders are expected to be able to read or spell independently. These words are used to enrich and enliven our conversations.
Each week, readers focus on one or two words inspired by our reading that week. I define each word, drawing on the recently-read text to place it in context for students. Students then draw and write about the words in their Wondrous Words notebooks, often making connections to their own lives. After introducing the words, we use them as often as possible during discussions and conversations.
