Should we buy more nonfiction texts? More fiction books?
Before beginning the next round of the Book Order Project, students in Room 123 taking an inventory of our classroom library to help them make better purchasing decisions. In the process, they are also developing conceptual understandings about place value and double-digit addition. At the same time, they are also practicing skills and strategies necessary for successful group and partner work.
Their initial challenge was to find the most efficient way to count large numbers of books. Take a look at our problem-solving teams in action!

All of the problem-solving teams found that counting the books by 10s and 1s was the most efficient. Students then worked in pairs to count the rest of our book bins, using what they had learned.
