Students in Room 123 have earned a lot of Tiger Tickets for showing the Richards Way at school! Of course, students wondered exactly how many tickets there are in our bin. Finding the answer to this question provided a chance to review place value counting concepts and practice different strategies for adding double-digit addition problems!
First, students counted tickets individually and then worked in pairs to add the amounts together. Take a look at the process!

During both language studies and science, students have been learning about insects. They have directly observed our mealworms as these insects moved through their life cycle. They have also read and analyzed nonfiction texts about insects, confirming their schema and adding new learning.
This week, students began reading poetry about insects–specifically bees. After I read one of Douglas Florian’s poems, students drew on both the imagery from the poem and their own knowledge of insects to visualize the poem. Take a look!

Scientists in Room 123 began a recent lesson by observing beetles closely. Then they recorded their observations using close-ups and labels to create detailed diagrams. In doing so, they made connections to the nonfiction text features they learned about during Language Studies.
