How can I be good friend? First graders have been reading fiction texts to find answers to that question!
After listening to a text, students worked in pairs to retell the story to be sure they understood and would remember important details. Then, as a group, they analyzed the story to identify the main characters, the problem, and the solution. Using those details, they engaged in lively discussions as they inferred the lessons from the text.
Finally, students took their thinking deeper by considering the challenges of actually acting on those lessons in real life. In small groups, they discussed how easy or hard it might be to use the lessons. Often, they used examples from their own lives–particularly from recess–as evidence for their opinions. Take a look at their thinking!
