In our last week of school, students in Room 123 shared poetry with kindergarten and first grade classes. Students worked individually to create costume hats and then worked cooperatively to create backdrops for their performances. They also rehearsed a lot, so they would sound fluent and fabulous!

Mary Cassatt’s The Letter was the focus of our last Art for Youth presentation this year. Mrs. Quehl led students to analyze the composition of this print and shared background on the artist. To conclude her presentation, she asked students to write their own letters.
Special thanks to Mrs. Quehl and the PTO for sponsoring this series!
Richards Elementary will present our annual Spring Sing on Thursday, May 24! There will be two performances: 10:00 (last names A-L and AM Ks) and 1:45 (last names M-Z and PM Ks).
Families will also be able to share lunch on the lawn that day, weather permitting. The first grade lunch schedule will be slightly different for this event: students will have recess at 11:40 and lunch at 12:05.
Students in Room 123 will come to the south front sidewalk (where they line up in the morning) after recess. Because the front lawn will be very crowded, please plan to pick up your child from the sidewalk at 12:05! Students will also line up there when the bell rings at 12:30 to return to our classroom.
(If the weather is inclement, students will eat in our classroom or the gym. Because of space limitations, parents will not be able to join their children for lunch inside.)
We look forward to seeing you at the Spring Sing!
First graders made connections between art and science during an Art for Youth presentation on Wednesday. Mrs. McDonald led students in a discussion about Alexander Calder’s artwork, focusing on his mobile Lobster Trap and Fish Tail. This led students to recall their learning from our earlier study of balance and motion. After this discussion, students explored balance by creating their own mobiles.
Special thanks to Mrs. McDonald and the PTO for sponsoring this program!
Rollerskating may be the perfect springtime pursuit, and first grade students are mastering the basics during a two-week Physical Education unit. Special thanks to the PTO for sponsoring this program, to parents for volunteering to help the program run smoothly, and to Mr. Genthe and Ms. Swanson for their expertise and enthusiasm!
Here’s a look at Room 123’s first day of rollerskating:

Despite being a short school week, Room 123 packed in a lot of special events. Our busy week began with a trip to the Milwaukee Art Museum for a Storytelling in Art tour.
Special thanks to Mrs. Gerard for accompanying us, and to the PTO for sponsoring transportation for this trip!
Later in the week, Richards students had visit from author Doreen Cronin. Younger students really enjoyed reciting Click, Clack, Moo with the author.
Students from Ms. Kreul’s 4th grade class also visited to perform a Reader’s Theater piece about Ireland in honor of St. Patrick’s Day.
On Friday, Richards students were treated to a Tuvan throat-singing concert featuring Alash. It was an amazing experience!
Students discussed the use of colors and shapes in William H. Johnson’s print Three Friends as part of our Art for Youth program. Special thanks to Mrs. Quehl for her time and effort, and to the PTO for sponsoring this program!
