The Tooth Fairy has long black hair that blows in the wind. She is smiling. She wears a long, pink dress with yellow starts on it and green slippers. She carries a black purse to keep the teeth in. She has two wings that look like butterfly wings. They are yellow, pink, and green. Her wand has a green handle and a star at the end. It sparkles to help her see in the dark.
Is this what the Tooth Fairy looks like? Students in Room 123 listened to these words and visualized what the Tooth Fairy may look like. Take a look at their creations:

This activity served as Room 123’s introduction to the International Tooth Tally Project. In its 11th year, this project allows students from all over the world to share how many teeth they lose over the course of three months. Along the way, students can learn more about life in other countries as well as hone their math skills. Watch for more Tooth Tally activities over the coming weeks!
Richards students enjoyed a dramatic version The Three Little Pigs performed by the Florentine Opera Company. Special thanks to the Richards PTO for providing this opportunity!
Who knew that snap words could inspire challenging math thinking?
It happened as students reviewed our growing stack of snap word flashcards. When students practice reading these words in a snap, they may say them in low voices or high voices or sleepy voices, and so on. They especially like to sing the words to the tune of the ABC Song.
However, we have not yet added enough words to sing through the whole song, and students wondered how many words we will need to do so. Students already knew that there are 26 letters in the alphabet, so we will need at least that many. Then we sang the song and counted 15 more words at the end of the song.
So what is the sum of 26 + 15? Students solved this problem in various ways, and then shared their thinking:
Next, we counted how many words we already have and used that information to calculate how many more cards we need to be able to get through the whole song. What is the difference between 32 and 41?
Math is everywhere!
Admirals Hockey mascot Roscoe was greeted with cheers at Monday’s School Meeting! Roscoe came to promote Richards Night at the Admirals, which will be held on Friday, February 10. This event is both a great fundraiser and a fun time for Richards School. For more information, check out the PTO January newsletter!

Thank you so much for the gift of artwork created by Room 123! This is the perfect gift for our classroom: The students’ work is beautiful and the gift benefits the Whitefish Bay Education Foundation’s Bay Ball fund, which is being used to upgrade technology in the district!
First grade students will be able to create podcasts with our new Snowball microphone, which was purchased for us by the Richards PTO! Everyone in first grade–students and teachers–wanted to say…
