Readers in Room 123 have begun a new unit of study: biographies. We will be reading first to learn about others, summarizing what the author thinks is important to know about their lives. Thomas Edison was the subject of our first biography.
We summarized important information…
…and learned more about the phonograph and early movies.
Then readers analyzed our notes, identifying the challenges Edison faced and how he responded to them. Students inferred character traits from those actions.
Finally, we discussed how we can use what we learned to help us achieve our dreams for the future.
We will continue learning about and from others over the next few weeks.

Richards students enjoyed a performance by the Milwaukee Ballet’s school touring company this week, and some students even joined in the finale! The theme of dance reminded the audience that “arts are a powerful and positive force.” Special thanks to the PTO for sponsoring this event!
At the start of the school year, students in Room 123 read The Dot and considered how they could best make their mark in first grade.
This week, we returned to this text. This time, students thought about how they want to make their mark as adults, what their dreams for the future are.
Of course, everyone faces challenges in achieving their dreams. Over the next few weeks, we will read biographies to learn how others faced and overcame challenges and how we can apply these lessons to our own lives.

Which season is best? Students in Room 123 are writing opinion pieces to convince others to agree with their choices.
Writers use a process to help make their writing the best it can be: planning, writing, revising, editing, and publishing. As with most endeavors, the planning stage is critical! First, students used webs to record the reasons for their choices, along with details to support the reasons.
As final step before writing, students used their webs to tell their reasons to a partner. This oral rehearsal helps them get ready to write. Take a look at partners at work!

When Room 123 returned from Winter Break, students found that seven students had lost teeth over break! They immediately began wondering if the class would lose more teeth in January than in December. They discussed the evidence and took a position on this question.
We returned to this question last week, near the end of the month. Students again discussed the evidence and weighed the evidence.
As a result, a number of students changed their thinking on the likelihood of losing more teeth in January.
We’ll find out today if our revised predictions were correct!
Scientists in Room 123 applied their learning about balance to a game called Suspend. The games were purchased for this purpose through a grant from the Whitefish Bay Education Foundation. Special thanks to the Foundation for making this possible!
