“What are you doing to help others?”
As we were reading about Dr. Martin Luther King’s life, a student raised a question: When he was a baby, did Dr. King know he would grow up to all those important things?
The class agreed that a baby couldn’t know that, but then had other questions: How did he do it? How did he get started?
I responded with some words from Dr. King: “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is what are you doing to help others?” By answering that question every day, Dr. King made great changes happen. By answering that question every day, students in Room 123 can do the same.

Chances are….
Losing a tooth is an important event in first grade and in Room 123 we celebrate each time it happens. When we returned after break, we celebrated four times in one day!
We also keep track of how many teeth are lost each month.
This data often leads to questions for students to consider, and they offer evidence for their predictions.
Students will return to this question later this month to update their evidence and, possibly, change their thinking. Check back in a week or so!
Welcome to Richards School!
Room 123 will welcome a new friend to our classroom when we return after winter break, so students decided to create a virtual tour of our school for her!
To accomplish this, the class first determined which people and places were most important to show. Then they took photographs and wrote captions for them using PicCollage. Take a look at their work and our school!

Meet our new mascot!
Meet our new mascot, the Richards Tiger! Our mascot needed a name, so students suggested possibilities and then voted to choose one. After all the votes were counted, our mascot was named Spirit!

Stone Soup
Inspired by the folktales we read, students worked together to make stone soup from the vegetables purchased on our farm market field trip!

The power of one, the importance of all
One–the book chosen by last year’s 5th grade class for their Legacy Award–shows both the power of one person to make a difference and the importance of everyone’s contribution. Led by Media Specialist Ms. Roberts, the class held bake sales last year to raise money to purchase a copy of the book for each classroom at Richards!
This book inspired the collaborative creation of a quilt. Under the guidance of Art Teachers Ms.Danforth and Mrs. Miller, each Richards student and staff member contributed a square.
In Room 123, students made connections from the book to their own lives and to other books we read during our folk tale unit.
Special thanks to those former-5th grade students, Ms. Roberts, Ms. Danforth, and Mrs. Miller!
