Our Class Promise in Action
Here’s what following the Richards Way looks like in Room 123!
You can see how students created their posters here.
Our Class Promise
Students are building a community of learners in Room 123! An important step in that process is writing our Class Promise.
Developing this important document took several days. Students first shared what they most want to learn about in first grade. Then we discussed how we all will need to act in order to achieve these learning goals. Using ideas from this discussion, we wrote our Class Promise, which is based on the Richards Way. We all signed this document to demonstrate our commitment to learning and to each other.

Celebrating success
At dinner last night, my husband and I were recounting our days. I told him that Room 123 had earned an extra recess by following the Richards Way. He replied, “I drove past school about 2:00 this afternoon and saw kids playing on the front playground. They certainly looked like they were having fun! Was that your class?”
It was and we were. Take a look!
Stone Soup
Students applied what they learned about healthy eating on our field trip to the farm market! After thoughtfully purchasing vegetables and fruits, they helped prepare these foods for Room 123’s Stone Soup Celebration.

Making our marks in 1st grade
Students are building a community of learners in Room 123! An important step in this process is writing our class promise.
We began the process by “making our marks” on International Dot Day. Then we discussed how we all will need to act in order to achieve our goals. Building on this discussion, students used words and pictures to create our class promise. Finally, we all signed this document to demonstrate our commitment to learning and to each other.
