All around the world
What is life like in different parts of the world? Last week, learners in Room 123 began to answer that question!
First, we read Wake Up, World, a nonfiction text about children’s daily lives around the world. As we read, we stopped periodically to summarize the most important information. After reading, students took their thinking deeper: they worked in pairs to compare and contrast their lives with the lives of children in other countries. This step is key to helping learners understand and remember new information.
As they worked, students noted that it was easier to identify ways in which people are different; finding similarities was more challenging. In the end, though, students did identify important ways in which children are the same. Wherever they live, children love their families, they need to eat and sleep and go to school, and they all love to play with their friends!
