It was how tall?
Building with magna-tiles is a favorite activity during Room 123’s daily Makerspace time. Earlier this year, students worked to build a tower…
…that was taller than the builders…
…and even taller than Mrs. Mooney!

In a classroom makerspace, students have access to various materials with which they can design and create. As envisioned by the Institute for Technology in Education (ISTE), makerspaces “promote learning through play and experimentation and are cross-disciplinary, with elements of art, science, and craftsmanship.” Classroom makerspaces encourage “a stance toward learning…a conviction that problems are made to be solved.” Development of this growth mindset will benefit students in all areas of schooling and life. Take a look at one of the first days in our makerspace!

To extend their science learning, students in Room 123 engaged in a Makerspace challenge: build a model of a plant that shows its main parts. Students chose to work individually or in pairs to complete this challenge.

Writers in Room 123 have begun learning about a new genre: opinion writing. The whole class worked together to write an opinion piece on a topic near and dear to their hearts–makerspaces.
They took the position that makerspaces are good for kids and then brainstormed facts to support this position.
Next, they considered their audience and which facts will be most convincing to them.
Finally, they added details and photos to each fact.
Students will continue their study of opinion writing over the next several weeks!
But the Somewhat Bad Wolf could not blow down the houses students built during our makerspace time!

As an extension of our study of folktales, makers in Room 123 were invited to design and build houses that the wolf cannot blow down. Many students took up the challenge and you can see their work below. Watch for the challenge results next week!
