First grade scientists began their study of balance and motion by exploring rotational motion. They used plastic disc and straws to create tops and tested different designs to discover how best to make stable tops. Above you can see what they learned from their experiments and below you can see them in action!

Scientists in Room 123 have been observing our brassica plants, focusing on how they have changed over time. Recently, they noticed the seed pods and used the document camera to take a closer look.
They found that the plants have moved through the entire life cycle and carefully recorded what they saw.
Being able to identify differences and similarities between groups is a critical thinking strategy, one that leads to deeper learning and achievement. Students in Room 123 are learning to use this strategy in all content areas. Earlier this year, for instance, readers studied animal classification and identified ways animals are different and similar.
Now, having studied plants through scientific observation as well as reading, they compared and contrasted animals and plants. Take a look at their thinking!
