Vowel sandwiches?
As readers engage with more complex text, they naturally encounter longer words and need strategies for decoding them. The “vowel sandwich” is one such strategy.
Here students practice “taking bites” of longer words and then reading them. They will apply this strategy both during guided reading and in their own reading of text. As the year continues, students will learn to adapt this strategy to include words with long vowel sounds and irregular words.
